In 1994, the Silverthorne Police Department started the Adopt an Angel program to provide for the residents of the Town of Silverthorne and it eventually expanded to serve Summit County residents. As a result of Adopt an Angel’s overwhelming success and a clear need for additional administrative support, in 2016 the Family & Intercultural Resource Center (FIRC) will be taking over management of Adopt an Angel to create a more sustainable program that can help more families.
“Adopt an Angel will remain a major philanthropic effort for the Police Department, but we are thrilled to have FIRC’s leadership, ensuring we continue to expand the important community program and help families who need it most,” said Silverthorne Police Chief John Minor. “Summit County Fire Departments, the Ambulance District and Police agencies have participated in the program and will continue to be involved and collect donations at their stations as they have in years past.”
Last year, Adopt an Angel allowed approximately 562 children and 254 families to enjoy a brighter holiday season. Summit County Fire Departments, the Ambulance District and Police agencies (Silverthorne, Breckenridge, Dillon, Frisco & Summit County Sheriff) all participate in the program. To make Adopt an Angel as effective and successful as possible, we receive referrals of children in financial need from a group of Summit County agencies. Some of the agencies providing these referrals are FIRC, Social Services, Community Connections, Public Health, Summit County Nursing, and the Summit County School District.
Local residents and retailers are the backbone of Adopt an Angel. Retailers help by displaying a Christmas tree in their lobby with wooden ornaments that describe the age and gender of a child. When local residents visit one of these retailers, they can pick their “Angel” and purchase a new toy that will be appropriate for the child described on the ornament. After purchasing these new gifts, local residents bring the unwrapped gifts to local fire, ambulance or police departments. Adopt an Angel also relies heavily on individual monetary donations, corporate sponsorships, and help from local volunteers.
Working together as a community, we are able to make a significant difference in the lives of so many special children each holiday season!
